WILLIAM PORCHER MILES

Elected mayor November 7, 1855, succeeding T. Leger Hutchinson. Succeeded by Charles Macbeth, November 1857.
Born 1822, died May 11, 1899, buried in Union Cemetery, Monroe County, West Virginia.
Son of James Sanders Miles and Sarah Warley, married Elizabeth Beirne 1863.
Attended Wellington School, Charleston; graduate (1842) of Charleston College.
Professor of mathematics at Charleston College, 1843-1855.
Two-term Congressman from South Carolina, serving from March 4, 1857, until the state delegation withdrew in December 1860.
Member of the Confederate Provisional Congress, February 1861, and representative in Confederate Congress, February 1862 to March 1864.
Colonel on the staff of General P. G. T. Beauregard.
President of the University of South Carolina, 1880-1882.
