JOHN DRAYTON

Elected intendant September 12, 1803, succeeding David Deas. Succeeded by Thomas Winstanley, September 1804. 
Born 1766, died November 27, 1822, buried at St. Paul's Episcopal Church [Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul].
Son of William Henry Drayton and Dorothy Golightly, married Hester Rose Tidyman 1794.
Read law in Charles Cotesworth Pinckney's office, admitted to bar in 1788. Attorney, botanist and author.
Represented St. Philip's and St. Michael's parishes in State House during three non-consecutive General Assemblies, 1792-1799. 1798 resigned from State House when elected Lieutenant Governor; elected 1800 to Fourteenth General Assembly, but did not serve.
January 1800, became interim governor upon death of Edward Rutledge, elected governor December 1800 for a two-year term.
Represented St. Philip's and St. Michael's parishes in General Assembly, 1802-1804; and in state Senate during three General Assemblies, 1804-1809. Resigned when elected governor December 1808 for a two-year term.
Held office of United States District Court Judge from 1812 until his death.
